It's a nice overview, but it only scratches the surface. However I found it to be a good introduction to the topic. It is very PC-centric, and not that useful if you are doing embedded work.Also I feel like the author doesn't really explain the concepts that well, like for example what the various structures actually represent, like which ones are associated with the driver as a whole, which ones are specific to each instance, etc.

It's a great book on writing device drivers for FreeBSD. Very well explanation onFreeBSD device driver architecture.The study of the book is also a good academic practice on how to usesynchronisation and concurrency primitives.I'm strongly recommend the book along with the classic"The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD operating system"for anyone delving in depth with operating system kernels,using the superb FreeBSD as a case study.

I already have the other book by the same author, Joseph Kong, "Designing BSD Rootkits: An Introduction to Kernel Hacking" and liked it very much, so when I got the chance to get an advance copy of his new book for review, "FreeBSD Device Drivers: A Guide for the Intrepid", I couldn't say no. :)To make the review more practical, I decided to write a simple driver myself and posted about it and the book on the FreeBSD forums, to find that post follow the WWW: link in the pkg-descr of the comms/uartlirc port (you can also look the port up on freshports.org .)About the book:The book introduces you to almost everything you need to know to write many types of drivers, it does this mainly by doing code walkthroughs for several example- and real-world drivers. About the Author
Flavio Faloci was born in Rome, Italy in 1965, and resides in Genova (Genoa) not far from the house of Christopher Columbus. His life-long connection with the sea began several generations ago. His grandfather was a tall ship captain and ship owner, as were several generations before his grandfather. Flavio began sailing Optis and building models by age ten. He is a sailing instructor for dinghies and cruising keelboats with the Centor Velico Caprera, the largest sailing/seamanship school in the Mediterranean. Flavio has worked as a yacht surveyor, yacht designer, and is currently employed as a naval architect at the head office of the Registro Italiano Navale, which is the Italian equivalent of the American Bureau of Ships (ABS). He has also been team captain and chief designer of the Trieste Waterbike Team, current holder of the Guinness record for longest distance covered in 24 hours.

About the Author
Simon Emmerson is Professor of Music, Technology and Innovation at De Montfort University, Leicester. As a composer, he works mostly with live electronics, recently for Sond'Arte (Lisbon), and acousmatic work for the Inventionen Festival (Berlin). His books include The Language of Electroacoustic Music (1986), Music, Electronic Media and Culture (2000) and Living Electronic Music (2007). In 2009-2010, he was DAAD Edgar Varese Visiting Professor at the TU, Berlin.

Leigh Landy directs the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre at De Montfort University. His scholarship is divided between creative and musicological work, and his compositions have been performed around the globe. He is editor of the journal Organised Sound and author of several books including Understanding the Art of Sound Organization (2007) and Making Music with Sounds (2012). He directs the ElectroAcoustic Resource Site (EARS) projects and is a founding director of the Electroacoustic Music Studies Network (EMS).
